Amazon’s Market Dominance

Amazon was founded in 1993 as an online bookstore. In 1998 it started to really take off and now Amazon has disrupted and transformed the retail shopping experience. Their low prices and fast delivery have catered to our thrifty and sometimes impulsive nature.

To survive, brick-and-mortar retailers have had to change the way they do business. Some have gone out of business and others have built or strengthened their online presence to compete. Many of the competitors have changed their pricing policies to regain lost market share.

This research was conducted over a three-month period. We’ve summarized each retailers’ price match policy. We’ve also included their key price match comments and a link to their policy page.

Many stores will match their own online prices and also match Amazon’s online prices (not third-party sellers, who are independent). By learning their policies, you can always get the best price on things you purchase.

All you need to do is bring the online listing (printed or on your phone) to the customer service desk to request a price adjustment or refund.

Does Walmart Price Match Amazon?

The item needs to be the exact model. It also needs to be in stock in the store where you are shopping. The manager on duty has the final decision on any Price match.

Walmart is the largest retailer in the U.S. They are battling Amazon for control of online and brick-and-mortar sales.

• In August of 2016, Walmart acquired Jet.com – an online shopping platform for $3.3 billion to help them compete against Amazon.
• Amazon made a bold move to enter brick-and-mortar sales with the purchase of Whole Foods in June of 2017 (a $13 billion dollar purchase).

The bottom line is that Walmart is fighting for market share and they will price match Amazon’s prices.

The electronics giant Best Buy says it won’t be beaten on prices.

Best Buy sales in the U.S. reached $42.15 billion in 2018. They are aggressively pricing their wares to gain more sales.

They will price-match key online retailers with some restrictions. For instance, Black Friday sales prices won’t be matched. But the rest of the year you can count on them to match the prices of other retailers.

Target’s extensive price match policy does not specifically mention Amazon. But it does mention that they will match prices from a “competitor’s website.”

If you want to price match on an item contact customer service at your local store to discuss the item before you head to the store.

We know this is not the most convenient way to price match, but it is the surest way to succeed.

Target Price Match Guarantee

We’ll match the price if you buy a qualifying item at Target then find the identical item for less at Target.com, select online competitors, or in Target’s or competitor’s local print ad. Price matches may be requested at time of purchase or within 14 days after purchase. The full list of online competitors is available online or at Guest Services.

If you find a current lower price within 14 days after purchase, just bring in the proof and we will adjust your payment to the lower price, upon request. Target store price matches and adjustments are completed at the store on any lane. For Target.com purchases, call Target.com Guest Services at 1-800-591-3869.

What you need to present

• Local printed ads: Present the entire printed advertisement. Photos or photocopies of the ad cannot be accepted as verification of a competitor’s printed ad. Digital versions of printed advertisements are accepted.

• Online prices: Present the price on your mobile device from a qualifying competitor’s website or Target.com. A Target team member will then verify the match using a Target device.

In July of 2023, Bed Bath & Beyond was resurrected from bankruptcy when Overstock.com bought its name, infrastructure, and technology.

Their price match policy statement now exists in their “Club O” program terms and conditions. All other pages on the website that previously mentioned Price Match have been removed.

To be allowed to price match, you must be a member of their Club O Program.

Club O members receive 5% in Club O Rewards with every purchase.

The Club O Rewards Membership fee is $19.95 per year.

While they are willing to price match Amazon and other retailers, it is on a product-by-product basis. They will only price match products that have a Price Match Guarantee badge on them. And this price match badge is not easy to find as it only will show up on items that carry the guarantee. There is no way to search for all price-matched items.

But when it comes to Price Matching Amazon the story is a little different.

They will Price Match a competitor’s advertised price (within 7 days of the ad). Their policy asks that you bring a printed version of the lower price as proof. So simply showing up with your smartphone showing Amazon’s price may not work.

They do state that they will not price match warehouse clubs.

Home Depot has always had a price match policy. Previously it was that they would beat any competitor’s price by 10%. As of 2019, the HomeDepot US website has omitted that they will beat prices any longer.

In-Store Price Match: We spoke to a local store associate and she said that while it isn’t advertised any longer, they do have the 10% price match override in the computer – they only will compete with other hardware stores like Lowes and Ace Hardware.

But this change in the 10 percent policy may be on a store-by-store basis and at the discretion of the customer services person you deal with.

Online Price Match: Their online policy states that they WILL price match competitor’s online pricing (including shipping). They aren’t clear on how to get the price match credit. And their customer service phone system was difficult to navigate. If you have an order number, you should be able to get them to price match after the purchase is completed.

Veteran’s Discount: One thing we love about Home Depot is that they do give US Military veterans a 10 percent discount all of the time.

Kohl’s has always been super generous in their discounts. They allow stacking of coupons, discounts, and sales. Their rewards club members (we’re one of them) are always sent notices of percent off and bonus dollars offers.

But when it comes to price matching, they are on the more reserved side.

Online Price Match Policy: They won’t price match online retailers (this means Amazon). They also will not match any advertised deal from a wholesaler (this may include Costco). But they will match Kohls.com prices, on exact same items, to a brick and mortar advertised price.

In-Store Price Match Policy: Kohl’s will price match a brick and mortar store retailer when you have a print ad or an online ad that can be verified by a store employee.

They leave the decision to store associates. So if you’re going to ask for a price match deal on an in-store advertised price, be polite, genuine and patient. We’ve found most of Kohl’s employees to be super-helpful and considerate.
