Product Description
Product Description
The Apples to Apples Junior family party game is made especially for kids. Designed for younger members of the family, it's as easy as comparing "apples to apples." With a hilarious mix of kid-friendly cards, it will keep younger players laughing while building vocabulary and thinking skills. Each round, the "judge" plays a Green Apple card, like "Amazing." The other players choose their best match from the Red Apple cards in their hand, such as "The Last Day of School." Trying to convince the judge that your card is the best answer is part of the fun! Colors and decorations may vary.
From the Manufacturer
"APPLES to APPLES JUNIOR brings the hilarious card and party game, Apples to Apples, to younger players. Players aged nine and up will delight in all the crazy comparisons, while expanding their vocabulary and thinking skills at the same time. The game is as easy as comparing apples to apples – just open the box, deal the RED APPLE cards to each player, and you’re ready to go! Players take turns being the judge. The judge starts each round by playing a GREEN APPLE card featuring a one-word characteristic such as Chewy, Amazing or Scary. The rest of the players must then look at the RED APPLE cards in their hands and select the one they think is best described by the judge’s card – will you play A Volcano, Unicorns or Burned Toast? When everyone’s RED APPLE cards are on the table, you should try to convince the judge that yours is the best match. You’ll find that table talk is a big part of the fun. Just wait until you hear all the clever – and not so clever – ways that people try to convince the judge to choose a particular card. Do your best, because if the judge picks your card, you win that round! The first player to win four rounds wins the game. With over 500 cards, each round is filled with surprising comparisons from a wide range of people, places, things and events. Fast-moving and refreshing, Apples to Apples Junior is easy to learn and fun to play. It’s the perfect game for kids, families and friends!"

The concept is quite simple. Everybody gets 5 red cards and they must choose a red card which matches with the green card on the table. For example, once we had a green card that said "Expensive" and I chose a red card that said "Superman". Now my job was to convince the judge (each player takes a turn to be a judge) why I think "Superman" is the most "Expensive" thing in the world - LOL. It can get quite imaginative and interesting as everyone tries to convince the judge with their own red cards.
As some other reviewers have commented it works best in larger groups, but don't despair if you want to play as a family of 4, just play the invisible player variant. Simply add one additional green card off the top of the deck. Sometimes this random one won't fit at all, other times it might just win! The extra card really helps to add a little variety to the game.
We played this across four generations of family at Christmas. Everyone can play and there was a lot of laughter around the table.
Downside: this game sort of presumes that everyone is aware of current culture: many references to Harry Potter, Star Wars, Paw Patrol, pop singers, etc. This tends to leave out some people.
All in all, I would say that most families can have fun with regular “Apples to Apples” and don’t need this version.
If the kids in your family watch a lot of tv then they may prefer this Junior version.
I have a feeling these pop culture references will be stale pretty soon. The red box Apples to Apples is a better game.
